The Fuente Osmeña Circle has become a center for cultural, social, and political events. Said to be the heart and soul of Cebu City, it connects four busy intersections in the city. The Circle also showcases the Fuente Osmeña (Osmeña Fuente), which is a fountain built to commemorate the completion of the city’s waterworks. It is now a focal landmark in Cebu City.
Magellan’s Cross is one of the most significant landmarks in Philippine history. It was planted by Spanish explorers as ordered by Ferdinand Magellan upon his arrival in the Philippine islands.
Magellan’s Cross now stands in a chapel next to the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño on Magallanes Street in front of Cebu City Hall. The original cross is encased in the wooden cross seen in the chapel to protect it from damage.
The Basilica Minore de Santo Nino is built in the 16th century and stands as the oldest church in the whole country. It was founded by Andres de Urdaneta, an Augustinian priest, on the spot where the image of the Sto Niño was discovered perfectly preserved in a burned wooden box.
Tourists and visitors can also visit the museum inside the basilica where antiques, historical objects, priestly vestments, religious statures and relics, and the Santo Niño’s old cloaks are on display.
Feeling adventurous? Visit Oslob, at the southern part of Cebu, and schedule a meeting with the famous whale sharks or Butanding! Early trips are required so that you will not elbow it out with other divers in the water who would want to glimpse the gentle giant as well.
